The Year of the Pig came on February 5, 2019. All divisions of Toronto Mandarin School, including weekend school, adult training center and JINGBAO Bilingual Children’s Centre held various events to celebrate the new year with students, families and friends.
Children at all JINGBAO sites were dressed up in holiday best and invited family to join them for the celebration. Activities included traditional Chinese arts and crafts, songs, music and dances.
Our adult students threw a big party on Friday, January 26, making our own dumplings, playing traditional Chinese game Mahjong, and writing Chinese calligraphy.
The annual Spring Festival Carnival (庙会/Temple Fair) at the weekend school was the highlight of the grand celebration. The event was held on Saturday, February 2 and attracted over thousands of people this year. Staff, students, parents and guests were all dressed in traditional clothing and made a great festive scene. Over twenty market stands were set up and festively decorated to showcase the traditions of the new year. Children and families played fun interactive games, made traditional art & crafts, bought new year decorations, tasted home-made Chinese food and learned how to do Chinese calligraphy and paper-cutting. Students and teachers also performed songs, dance, drama and poetry. The God of Fortune and Three Little Pigs were the celebrities of day, greeting people with good wishes and handing out red envelops to the crowd. The traditional lion dance put a perfect end of the celebration, symbolizing good fortune a prosperity of the new year.
Wish everybody a happy Year of the Pig!
